Gerald R. Ford represented the Grand Rapids area in the US House of Representatives from 1949 to 1973. He became Vice President of the USA in December 1973, following the resignation of Spiro Agnew, and President in August 1974 on the resignation of Richard Nixon. He is famously the only person to serve as both Vice President and President of the USA without being elected to either post. (In the 1976 presidential election he lost to the Democratic Party's candidate, Jimmy Carter – having beaten Ronald Reagan to become the Republican nominee.)
